<論説>マサチューセッツ州におけるジャクソニアン運動

Abstract

ジャクソニアンの実体の具体的解明の一手段として、一九五〇年以降、殊に地方史的研究の分野において、注目すべき努力が払われて来た。ここに採り上げるマサチューセッツ州は、国内でも最初に産業革命という経済上の変化を経験しながら、なお政治的には保守主義の強固な支配下に置かれていた。この地のジャクソニアンの運動が南部や西部諸州のそれとは自ら異なった動きを示したのはむしろ当然であった。本稿では、この運動の盛り上りをジャクソンよりはヴァン・ビューレンとの関連において捉らえ、その本質を、高まりゆく産業主義の中に、いち早く既成陣営を固めんとしたボストン・アソシエイツ等の特権的先行者に対し、土着小資本を有するアグレリアンが、事業に関する機会の均等を要求した運動として考えてみた。換言すれば、それはシュレジンガー・Jrが考えたような都市労働者を主体とした急進的な運動ではなく、むしろ独立宣言以来の古典的民主主義の一変型であったと想定されるのである。

Especially in the field of the regional history, remarkable efforts have been made since 1950 as a means of practical explanation of the Jacksonian movement. The state of Massachusetts, though influenced by the economical change such as the industrial revolution which started earliestly in the country, was still politically under strong control of conservatism. It was natural that the Jacksonian movement here was different from those of the Southern and the Western states. I thought in this article that this movement was rather uplifted by M. Van Buren than by Jackson, and that it was the movement in which the Agrarians with small property in their own farms demanded the equal opportunity for business against the privileged forerunners of Boston Associates and others who tried to guard their camp in the rising industrialism. In other words, it is supposed that it was not the radical movement dominated by the urban laborers, as is suggested by A. M. Schlesinger, Jr., but one of the various forms of classical democracy advocated since the Declaration of Independence.
