<論説>田口卯吉における「論策」と「学問」

Abstract

これまで、田口卯吉の思想の評価は、必ずしもイデオロギー的評価と整合性をもって展開されなかった。本稿では、田口の「学問」(自然・社会法則の認識) と「論策」(政策論) の関係を明らかにし、これらと、彼が立脚する社会的基盤の関係を示そうと試みた。田口にあって、「論策」は、単に「学問」から演繹されてでてくるのではない。「論策」は「学問」より、むしろ社会的現実の方により近い距離をもっているのである。このことは、彼が歴史の原動力と考えた「労力社会」が、現実には産業資本家ではなく、都市の小生産者を示したことに明らかである。従って、彼の思想活動の後半期に特に著しいとされる、思想の空想的性格についても、理論信仰からくる思想の硬直性によって説明するのではなく、日本産業資本の確立によって、彼の立脚する社会階層そのものが没落するという、社会的現実との対応で考えなければならないのである。

The valuation of Ukichi Taguchi's 田口卯吉 idea has not always been consistently developed with ideological evaluation. In this article we will make clear the relation of Taguchi's "Gakumon" ｢学問｣, or his recognition of natural and social law, with "Ronsaku" ｢論策｣, or his political measure; and also these relation with his social standpoint. To Mr. Taguchi, "Ronsaku" is not deduced directly from "Gakumon", for it is closely connected with social reality than "Gakumon". This will be clearly explained in his opinion that "labour society" which he thought would be the generative power of history is not industrial capitalists but really the smaller urban manufacturers. So his utopian thought, which is said to be especially prominent in the latter half of his life, should not be explained by his rigid thought from belief of the theory, but in correspondence to social reality that the social class itself on which he stood was ruined due to the establishment of industrial capital in Japan.
