<論説>アルキロコスについて : ギリシア植民時代の詩人

Abstract

ギリシア抒情詩の創始者とも称されるアルキロコスについては、戦後における新資料の発見とも関係して、評価や解釈に相当な変化が生じている。それゆえ本稿では、まず新資料を紹介するとともに、学説の動向を整理する。そのうえで、第一にはアルキロコスの非常に現代的とも見える思想を、一種の実存主義として説明しようと試みるが、しかし同時に土俗的な祭儀とも関係していた点を重視する。第二には、この詩人の社会的背景との関係を問題にする。彼を海賊とする説、傭兵とする説などを排すると同時に、他方では、全面的に愛国的なポリス詩人とする説をも排し、植民活動という特殊な条件と関係づけて把握する。

The archaeological evidence for early Greece in general has in the past generation so much grown, that we can now get at least a glimmering of the social and material conditions of the Lyric Age of Greece. Especially for Archilochos important materials have been discovered after the end of the Second World War : the Archilocheion inscriptions on the island of Paros, and the Glaukos monument in the Agora of Thasos. These new materials have brought about fundamental changes in the interpretation of Archilochos. The poet who had usually been branded as an outlaw or at least a soldier of fortune is now called a "Polisdichter" (M. Kontoleon). In this paper the author examines views on Archilochos in this century and tries to interpret afresh his thought and his attitude to society. In spite of his conspicuous self-centredness, which the author explains as a sort of existentialism, Archilochos seems to have a sense of public duty hidden somewhere in his soul. The both-sided nature of Archilochos is explained as an outcome of the complicated social conditions of Greece during the colonial expansion. We might say that the vigorous spirit of the colonizing "politai" found expression in the poetry of Archilochos.
