<論説>帝国植民省とジェイムソン侵入事件

Abstract

一八九五年一二月末のジェイムソン侵入事件は、イギリス帝国主義がアフリカ南部の内陸高地草原に最終的に樹立される道程におきた陰謀事件である。この陰謀は、金山二大会社の直接関係者を首謀者として立案されたうえに、覆面した帝国植民省によって遮蔽された背後から、不可欠の便宜と強硬な指示とを与えられてすすめられた、蜂起と侵入と干渉の共謀であって、それじしんは失敗におわったにもかかわらず、四年後の南アフリカ戦争の前奏曲として想起される。本稿は、もっぱら帝国植民省による共謀への関与と介入、ならびに事後におけるその隠蔽工作に課題を集中する。

This paper, suggested by studies of Jean van der Poel and Ethel Drus, draws attention to the complicity of the British Colonial Office in the Jameson Raid (1895/96). The original conspirators of the Raid were members of the two big deep-level companies in Witwatersrand gold mines, the Transvaal. Then, Joseph Chamberlain intervened in the conspiracy. Firstly, he transferred the border zone of Bechuanaland and the police force to the Chartered Company, after knowing the truepurpose of Cecil Rhodes. Secondly, he transferred it, intending to make the Transvaal a British colony. Thirdly, he gave Rhodes advice to the date of rising. After the Raid, he, with the Committee of Inquiry, covered the complicity of the Colonial Office, and contined provocative policies against the Transvaal. The Raid was a prelude to the South African War.
