<論説>ウィリアム・ロイド・ガリスン

Abstract

一八三〇年代に活躍した合衆国の奴隷制廃止論者たちの中でも、Ｗ・Ｌ・ガリスンはその知名度の高さ、主張の過激さにおいて当時群を抜いていたが、今日歴史家たちの間でも、彼の非妥協的な運動路線は──Ｔ・Ｄ・ウェルド、Ｅ・ライトらのニューヨーク派廃止論者たちの保守的姿勢と対比して──いわば覚醒的意義をもつものとして、高く評価される傾向がある。本稿の狙いはこの点に再検討を加えることにある。その場合まず、ガリスン的思考の集約的表現はノンレジスタンス運動であったとの観点から、この運動を重点的に取り上げて、そこに窺われる特質が基本的にはＪ・Ｈ・ノイズの完全主義なる教義に由来していること、ガリスンの行動原理もこの教義の中に明確な定式化を持っていること、を見る。ガリスン派奴隷制廃止運動の性格、これとニューヨーク派路線との相違といった問題に関しては、こうした点を踏まえたうえで論及することにしたい。

Among the abolitionists of the United States of America in the 1830's, W. L. Garrison was one of the most well-known social reformers. His uncompromising spirit is often praised highly, as compared with the conservative attitude of New York group, by radical historians. In this treatise which aims at the re-examination of Garrison and his group, I will pay more attention to two factors than any other : viz. Garrison's non-resistance movement and Noyes' perfectionism. In my view the former, which seems to be based on the latter, is the most intensive expression of Garrisonian thought. The characteristics of Garrisonian abolitionism will be interpreted from this axis of non-resistance-perfectionism, and be compared with those of New York group.
