<論説>中世におけるケンブリッジ大学の諸問題 : 最近の研究成果を基礎に

Abstract

本稿は、中世におけるケンブリッジ大学の歴史を、三つの角度から考察する。その第一では、従来漠然とした形でしか論じられてこなかった当大学の起源につき、より具体的な証拠をもってアプローチすること。第二の部分は、十三・四世紀における当大学に対し、目立たない、しかも三流の大学という評価を与えたH・デニフレやH・ラシュドールの見解を、一九六三年ローマで発見された新史料にもとづき、修正を加えること、第三点では、これも今日まで無視されてきたコレジ(キングズ・ホール) の歴史を通して、十四・五世紀のケンブリッジ大学の性格を垣間見る。このキングズ・ホールは、国王を創立者とするコレジであり、その名前からも推察されるとおり、国王との関係のきわめて顕著なコレジである。このコレジの分析から、大学と国王とのからみあいを明らかにしたい。

The object of this essay is to illustrate the Cambridge University in the middle ages from three kinds of aspect. The first is to make clear of the obscure origin of the University of Cambridge by the more concrete evidences. The second is to modify the accepted theory established by H. Denifle and H. Rashdall, that the Cambridge University in the 13th and 14th centuries was the insignificant third-rate one, by making use of the new material which was discovered at Angelica library, Rome, in 1963. The third is to get glance at the character of this University in the 14th and 15th centuries through the history of King's Hall, one of the medieval colleges, which was founded by king Edward II in 1317 and was amalgamated in Trinity College by king Henry VIII in 1546. And in this essay this University and this college are concluded to be not only significant and well known institution but also, in the special reference with the latter, the training foundation of royal officials in the later middle ages.
