<論説>十六世紀ヴェネツィア史における政治意識の覚醒

Abstract

十六世紀当初のヴェネツィアにおける政治意識の覚醒が、何によってもたらされたかを検討するのが本稿の目的である。そのために、一五〇九年から始まったカンブレー同盟戦争がヴェネツィア人の意識、文化の上におよぼした影響をのべ、さらに、十五世紀末から十六世紀当初にかけてのパドヴァ・ヴェネツィアの思想界の情況を概観し、それが人間社会の冷静な観察をもたらすものであることをのべる。以上の政治の世界と思想の世界との情況を前提として、ガスパーロ・コソタリー二が、行動的生活と隠遁的生活との相克に苦しみながら、政治生活の道を選択した理由は、彼の哲学研究とくにポンポナッツィの思想の影響によることを示す。そして彼の主著『ヴェネツィアの行政官と共和国』を通して、彼の政治思想を検討する。

The purpose of this article is to make clear the cause of awakening of Venetian political consciousness in the sixteenth century. After 1515, the Venetian patriciate devoted increasing attention to literary projects intended to restore the damaged prestige of the state by presenting the republic as an ideal political society, a conception which contemporary historians have called the 'Venetian myth' . Gasparo Contarini, the propagator of the 'Venetian myth' , seemed exemplary in his combination of the lives of religion, scholarship and service to the state, but this harmony was probably not achieved without an element of personal crisis. Analizing his personal crisis, this article emphasizes the influence of Pietro Pomponazzi upon the political consciousness of Gasparo Contarini. Finally, the author relates that Contarini's 'De magistratibus et republica Venetorum' is largely a portrait of static perfection and offers a Venetian expression of the conservative idealism of the age.
