<論説>戦国大名長宗我部氏の城下岡豊 (おこう) の市町

Abstract

小稿は、筆者がこの数年来進めている戦国末～近世初頭の土佐国における地方的中心集落に関する歴史地理学的研究の一環として、戦国大名長宗我部氏の城下岡豊の商業地区であった岡豊新町の景観を復原し、その特色と盛衰を検討しようとするものである。『長宗我部地検帳』によれば、岡豊新町は七二筆の屋敷地から構成され、その総面積は三町二反三〇代勺であった。この町並は岡豊城下の核心部にあたる岡豊城東麓の沖積低地に位置し、南北方向の街路に沿う町並と東西方向の街路に沿う町並とに分れ、両者は屋敷名請人の構成やプランのうえで異なった特色を有していた。この相違は、町並建設の時代と背景の違いを反映するものと考えられる。岡豊新町は、一六世紀末の土佐国にみられた二〇余ケ所の地方的中心集落の中では最大の規模を有するものの一つではあったがまだ土佐一国を領域とする地方都市にまでは成長していなかった。

Okô-shinmachi 岡豊新町 was the market district in a castle town, Okô, under the rule of the Chôsokabes, sengoku-daimyô. This article aims at representing its landscape and investigating its character and its rise and fall. It is a part of a historical geographical study on the local central places in Tosa 土佐 Province from the last years of the civil wars to the early days of the modern ages, which the author has been making for some years. According to the Chôsokabe's Cadastre Books 長宗我部地検帳, Okô-shinmachi consisted of 72 hitsus 筆 (lots) and covered 3 chôs 町 2 tans 反 and 30 daishakus 代勺 (35, 643㎡) in extent. It was located in an alluvial lowland at the east foot of Okô Castle, constituting the heart of the town. There were two streets, which ran in two directions, one from south to north and the other from east to west, making two different types of street with regard to the constitution of naukenins 名請人 (copyholders) of houses and lots and the planning of the streets. These differences must be due to the disparities in the times and the backgrounds of their construction. Although one of the largest among more than 20 local places in Tosa at the end of the 16 th century, Okô-shinmachi had not yet grown up to be a city whose activity would cover Tosa Province wholly.
