<論説>陂渠灌漑下の稲作技術

Abstract

私は本誌三八巻五号に「応劭『火耕水耨』注より見たる後漢江淮の水稲作技術について」と題する小論を発表した。その要旨は応劭注、『周礼』稲人々の鄭玄注は、共に稲の連作を示すものであり、『斉民要術』の稲作にも一年休閑はない、ということであった。この小論は、西嶋定生氏の、漢から唐の中頃までの稲作は一年休閑が普通であったという説(同氏火耕水耨について『和田博士還暦記念論文集』) に対する反対論であったが、その後西嶋氏は『中国経済史研究』において、私の説を全面的に否定し、 一年休閑説を再確認された。鷹陵史学(七号) に発表した小論は、それを再批判して、前記の論文に大過のないことを確認したものである。しかしこの論文は直接水稲栽培の技術を述べた、特殊な史料を使用したものであるので、その結論が、果して正史その他の一般史料に見られる稲作の記載に適用できるか否かの問題が残されているともいえる。本論文はその点を検討したものである。

In our journal, 38, No. 5, I announced an article under the title of "The Technique of Rice Culivation in Ch'iang Huai 江淮 at Later Han 後漢" . The point of my consideration was to show that both the comment on Huo-kên-shui-nou 火耕水耨 of Ying Shao 応劭 and the comment on the passage of Tao-jên 稲人 at Chou-li 周礼 of Chêng Hsüan 鄭玄 show the consecutive rice cultivation, and that there are no suggestion about the biennially fallow in Ch'i-min-yao-shu 斉民要術. This article was also opposed to the opinion of Sadao Nishijima that the biennially fallow was common as the cultivation method from Han 漢 to about the middle of Tang 唐 (S. Nishijima, "Huo-kên-shui-nou" in Studies Presented to Dr. Wada on the Occasion of His Sixtieth Birthday). Later, in "The Study of Economic History of China" , he denied completely my opinion and reaffirmed the theory of biennially fallow. My article published in "The Ôryô Shigaku" , 8, criticized his opinion again and confirmed that there were no serious errors in my first article. However, in this article, the particular historical materials stating directly the art of cultivation were used, so it would be said an open problem whether its conclusion can be applied to the mentioned items reffering to rice cultivation in authentic records and others, or not. Here I examine this respect.
