<論説>現代歴史学と数量的方法

Abstract

この二〇年間に、歴史学における数量的方法ーコンピュータ、統計分析、数理モデルーの使用は、世界的規模で進行した。特にアメリカ歴史学界における数量的方法の浸透は目覚ましいものがあったが、それは研究条件の整備や研究の組織化を伴った持続的現象として歴史学全体に拡がり、一九七〇年代前半には、「数量的歴史学」あるいは「ニュー・ヒストリー」と呼称される新しいタイプの歴史学が誕生したのである。本稿では、従来、手段としてのみ評価してきた数量的方法を、現代歴史学の性格規定に関わる現象と捉え、その方法論的意味を検討する。検討の結果、数量的方法は、(1)対象分析のための有効な手段として、(2)研究過程において仮説の形成と検証を促す触媒として、(3)現代歴史学の科学としての成熟を可能にする方法論的革新として、登場してきた事が明らかになった。

These two decades the application of quantitative methods --computers, statistical analysis, and mathematical models-- to history has been increasingly made on a world-wide scale. Especially in the United States it has been fully done not as a personal success but as a continuous movement with institutionalizations, and recently produced an innovative histoty --a "quantitative", "new", or "social science" history. The aim here is to examine the meanings and functions of quantitative methods in contemporary historiography. I make it clear that quantitative methods play an important role in the process of historical studies; that is, a useful means of analyzing historical problems, an acceptance of the scientific formulation of investigation and explanation in history, and a methodological innovation in contemporary historiography that makes it possible to process a vast amount of multivariate phenomena.
