<論説>片山 潜

Abstract

本論でわたしは、片山潜の思想と運動を「文献的」に解釈するのではなく、それへの執念を生みだし支えていたものが一体何であったのかという観点から片山をみていく方法をとった。このように考えたとき、片山の一八八四～九六年(二五～三七歳) の「在米生活」は、生涯の軌跡を決定したといってよいほどの意味をもっている。なぜならそこで片山は、 「欧米社会」のもっている圧倒的な重量を「先進(優越) 性」ととらえることによって「日本社会」の「後進(劣等) 性」を、いいかえれば「日本の現実」を棚上げあるいは欠落させることによって「欧米の先進(優越) 性」を手に入れたからである。そしてこのことが片山の場合、日本の健全かつ合理的な「近代化」のためには、欧米の「進歩的」な社会思想と運動を日本に移殖することが不可欠であるという「情念」と結びついていったからである。片山の生涯の軌跡から夾雑物をとりさってみれば、その根底には常にこの「情念」があり、それこそが片山の思想と運動の実体だった、というのがわたしの考えである。

In this paper I do not analyse Katayama Sen's ideas and movements on the basis of documentary records and interpretations but try to grasp him by considering what made him cling to such ideas and what drove him to such movements. Seeing him from the viewpoint, his experience in the United States from 1884 to 96 (from his twenty-five years of age to thirty-seven) proves to count so much that it might be said to orient his future career. There in the United States he took the colossal massiveness and affluence which Euro-American societies seemed to him to show off in every respect for the forwardness (senshinsei) 先進性 and accepted it and acted as if he owned it, while he failed to put into question or shelved the backwardness 後進性, actual conditions, of Japanese society. This, in his case, led to the passionate obsession that, for the sound and rational modernization (kindaika) 近代化 of Japan, it was indispensable to transplant the advanced social ideas and movements of Euro-American societies in Japan. Taking away odds and ends from his career, there always remains the obsession. And it is the substance of his ideas and movements.
