<論説>サルターティの人文主義と『僭主論』 : バロン史学への疑問と考察

Abstract

十五世紀のフィレンツェの人文主義に対して、「市民的人文主義」という歴史概念をもって分析を展開したバロンのルネサンス史学は、一定評価されている。彼は、十四世紀の人文主義から十五世紀のそれへの移行を、中世的なものから近代的なものへの発展として捉え、サルターティはそこで過渡的役割を果したとされる。すなわちサルターティは、市民的、共和主義的立場を明言して十五世紀の新しい人文主義を示唆するところがあったが、結局、晩年における借主の台頭の中で、宗教的、君主主義的な十四世紀の人文主義に回帰したとされる。このバロンの判断は『僭主論』の解釈による。しかしその解釈は、文献の客観的読解、著作の書かれた背景の認識、そして人文主義的著作へのアプローチにおいて疑問が残る。特に人文主義者における修辞学的志向に配慮すべきである。『僭主論』の解釈に問題がある以上、それを前提とした彼のサルターティ観、「市民的人文主義」も再検討されるべきであろう。

Hans Baron, an American scholar of Renaissance history, took a general view of the history of Renaissance thought from a new viewpoint based upon his synthesis of the politics and humanistic literature of the period when Florence passed from medieval ideas to the civic thought of Renaissance society. Coluccio Salutati is, in Baron's theory, interpreted as a transition from medieval humanists, such as Petrarch, to Renaissaance humanists, such as L. Bruni, one of the most outstanding theorists of "Civic Humanism." Baron's images of Salutati are derived mainly from Salutati's De Tyranno, a work written in 1400 against the background of the rise of tyranny in Italy. However, Baron's interpretation, it seems, is questionable in some points : is it right to look at Salutatl's work solely as a reaction to the critical situation of Florence? Does not the work, a letter written by a humanistic teacher, reflect the humanistic rhetoric of the period? we should re-examine this problematic work from a broadened cultural perspective, in light of the background of Renaissance thought, and above all the rhetorical tradition of Renaissance Humanism.
