<論説>イングランド宗教改革期の教区聖職者

Abstract

一六世紀中葉のイングランドでは、大幅な聖職者の不足にみまわれ、宗教改革の進行にも少なからず影響を及ぼした。聖職者減少の原因としては、修道院解散などの宗教改革それ自体がもたらした教会の混乱、聖職の持つ経済的メリットの減少、疫病流行による死亡率の上昇などが考えられる。この聖職者不足からは、教区教会の欠員・兼領・不在任といった弊害が生じ、時々の政府の宗教政策実施の大きな阻害要因となり、とりわけメアリのカトリック復活は十分な成果をうることができなかった。この状態はエリザベス即位後も続き、当初は性急な改革は無理であったが、治世の長期化は教会にも安定をもたらし、状況は好転した。聖職志望者の増加に加え、大卒聖職者が増えたことは、聖務の質を向上させ、教区聖職者の社会的地位もそれに従って上昇し、ここに、以前とは違った形での、まとまった社会グループとしての聖職者が出現することになった。

In mid-sixteenth century England, the shortage of clergy men arose from the confusion caused by the Reformation; for example, the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the economic difficulties of ecclesistical recruitment. This phenomenon caused critical problems for the church, for instance vacancy, pluralism, non-residence and so on, which had a crucial effect upon the religious policy of the government. The situation was especially serious for the Marian government, which intended to re-establish the authority of the Roman Catholic Church in England. This situation continued in the reign of Elizabeth so that she could not make bold changes in the institution of the church. But her long reign brought about stability in the church and produced good results. Notable were the increasing numbers of graduates among the clergy which caused an improvement in the quality of the parish clergy. Finally the clergy as a new social group emerged from this new situation. This was an important aspect of the Church of England.
