<論説>ビザンツ貴族と皇帝政権 : コムネノス朝安定化への過程

Abstract

十一世紀、ビザンツ帝国は異民族の侵寇と続発する貴族反乱によって内外から激しく揺さぶられ、減亡の危機に陥っていた。本稿の課題は、この時期の帝国政治の主役を演じたビザンツ貴族たちの行動を分析することで、当時の政治的混迷の原因を探り、そこから、あわせて、こうした深刻な状況を終息させ、その後百年に及ぶ国内平和の時代を築きえたコムネノス朝支配体制の性格を解明することにある。その際には、貴族たちの出身地域ごとの存在形態の違いや、それがこの激動の時代にいかなる変動を被ったかといった点も考察の対象となろう。その結果、この時期の歴代皇帝政権はいずれも少数の支持者で権力の独占を図ったため、疎外された他の貴族の反乱を招き、それが政局のさらなる混迷をもたらしたこと、これに対し、アレクシオス＝コムネノス政権の場合は、危機打解のために、当初からの支持基盤である小アジア系貴族に加え、バルカン地域の貴族勢力との妥協・提携を迫られ、それが結果的に多くの貴族層を糾合した安定した支配体制の樹立を導いたこと、が指摘されるのである。

In the eleventh century, the Byzantine Empire, heavily troubled with the invasions of barbarians and the continual revolts of aristocrats, fell into a crisis of collapse. In this paper, we tried to make clear the following problems. (1) What was the cause of political confusion at that time? In this regard, we must analyze the behavior of the aristocrats who played the most important role in the political life of the Empire. (2) Then, what was the character of the regime of the Comnenian Dynasty, that put an end to a time of trouble and made an epoch of internal peace? In this case, we must take account of the existance of the provincial aristocrats, who varied according to the locality of their home, and the change of their state in this violent time. As a result, we came to the conclusion that the oligarchic character of the emperors' governments in this time caused the revolts of alienated aristocrats meanwhile Alexius Comnenus' government, confronting the crisis, was forced to cooperate with the Balkan aristocrats adding them to the Anatolian ones who formed the original basis of the government. Consequently, Alexius could build up the regime rallying extensive support from aristocratic members.
