<論説>ヴィクトリア時代の労働者と自伝

Abstract

十九世紀中葉以降のイギリス労働史を読み解く鍵として、「労働貴族」あるいは「リスペクタブルな労働者」の存在が注目されてきた。しかし、近年この層が担ったとされる価値規範のレヴェルから、こうした像の再検討の必要性が主張されてきている。それによると、同時代の外的観察者たるミドル・クラスによる、「リスペクタブル」な者と「ラフ」な者への選別的二分法が、この像の形成に多大な影響を及ぼしてきたとされる。とするならば、リスペクタビリティという価値規範を担ったとされる労働者自身の自己認識は如何なるものだったのだろうか。本稿では、彼ら自身の手になる自伝を分析し、そこに描かれる自己像を明らかにすることからこの問題へのアプローチを試みた。その結果、ミドル・クラスが理念化した「リスペクタブル」な側面のみならず、それとは一見矛盾を孕む「伝統文化」へのアイデンティティという二重の自己像が浮かび上がってきた。このことは、逆にミドル・クラスによる労働者二分法の恣意性、ひいてはリスペクタビリティの一面的強調の問題性を明らかにするものである。

The labour aristocracy or "the respectable working-men" have attracted much attention as the key groups in understanding British working class history after the middle of the nineteenth-century. But, recently these groups have been reconsidered with special attention to the quality of their values. In the course of this reconsideration, it is claimed that these figures have been much influenced by the distinction between "the respectable" and "the rough" drawn by middle-class contemporaries as external observers of the working-class. If it is so, how did "the respectable working-men" see themselves? In this article, we tried to approach this question by analyzing the autobiographies written by working-men themselves and showing their identity in them. As a result, it is made clear that these autobiographies have two aspects : on the one hand, autobiographers show their belief in respectability, which the middle-class idealized, and on the other hand, they show their identity with "traditional' culture", which, to middle-class eyes, would contradict respectability. This, in return, will show how arbitrary that distinction was, and how superficial the figure of "the respectable working-men" is.
