<論説>上シンド盛期ハラッパー以前の土器

Abstract

いまインダス文明の研究の中で最大の問題点になっているのは、盛期ハラッパー文化期以前の段階の文化実態に対する理解である。これをめぐって「先ハラッパー文化説」と「初期ハラッパー説」とが両立している中で、この段階の文化様相について、上シンド地方におけるモエンジョ・ダーロ、コト・ディジ、アムリ三つの重要な遺跡の土器に対し、型式学的な角度から比較研究を行なった結果、これまで未知であったモエンジョ・ダーロの下層文化はコト・ディジ文化とアムリ文化とも性格の異なる、盛期ハラッパー文化の直系的な文化、いわば「真の初期ハラッパー文化」であるという結論に達したのである。この結論によって、前二千年代前半、上シンド地方における文化の展開についてもっとも合理的な説明ができるだけでなく、従来の学説で解決されていない盛期ハラッパー文化とその下層文化との性格上の相違、層位および分布関係等の諸問題について根本的に見直す契機が生まれたといえる。

At present, the focal point in the study of the Indus civilization is how the character of the cultural assemblages, which has been considered as developed before the Mature Harappan period, should be understood. In association with this, until now the theory of "Pre- Harappan cultures" and the theory of "the Early Harappan culture" have been in opposition. In order to understand the cultural assemblages of the period, a comparative study of the pottery from the important sites in the upper Sind, such as Moenjo-Daro, Kot Diji and Amri is attempted from a typologic point of view. The study comes to the conclusion that the occupation of the lower levels in Moenjo-Daro, which has been unknown to us, undoubtedly is a cultural assemblage directly- related to the Mature Harappan culture and it may be called "the real early Harappan culture". It is characteristically different from both of the Amrian culture and the Kot Dijian culture. Based on this conclusion, a reasonable explanation can be given for the cultural development in the upper Sind during the first half of the third millennium B. C. In addition, it brings about an opportunity to understand thoroughly vital unsolved problems regarding the sharp differences in cultural character, the relations between stratigraphies and distributions between the Mature Harappan culture and other preceding cultures.
