<論説>畿内弥生土器の推移と画期

Abstract

畿内地方の弥生土器には中期から後期にかけて大きな変化があるとされている。本稿では、まず、畿内弥生土器を構成する各器種の系列を復原してその変化を概観し、同時に編年の重要な指標とされる箆描沈線文、櫛描文、凹線文について検討をおこなった。そしてこれらの文様が描かれる器種の関係を整理した結果、各器種が櫛描文の有無によって大きく二つのグループ、すなわち櫛描文型器種と非櫛描文型器種に分かれることが明らかになった。さらに、この櫛描文型の諸器種と非櫛描文型の諸器種の展開の状況を、筆者が考える土器編年の中に跡づけることによって土器様式の推移を分析した結果、中期から後期への土器の変化が、より本質的には新旧の器種、つまり櫛描文型の諸器種と非櫛描文型の諸器種が漸進的に交替する過程として捉えられることが明らかになった。この時期、土器の新旧の器種の転換が進行する過程には、畿内の倭人社会が、旧習に代えて次の古墳時代へとつながっていく新しい習俗・祭儀形態を発達させていった姿が反映されているものと考える。

Yayoi pottery of the Kinai district is thought to have undergone a great change between the middle phase and the late phase. In this paper, I first examine the change in pottery surface patterning and the relation of pottery types to these patterns, dividing the various types largely into two groups : comb patterned and non-comb patterned. I then examine, chronologically, how these two pottery types developed. I conclude that the change between the middle and late phases can be understood as being the result of a gradual shift from comb patterned to non-comb patterned types. I believe that this great evolution in pottery styles reflects the changing social conditions, customs and religious forms which occurred towards the beginning of the Kofun 古墳 era.
