<論説>近代英国のレヴァント貿易 : 一八世紀の衰退について

Abstract

英国の海外貿易は一六六〇年以降驚異的な発展期にはいる。しかし、この時期からレヴァント貿易は英国全体の動向と反して静的なものとなり、一八世紀以降は衰退する。本稿ではこの商業革命期におけるレヴァント貿易の停滞と衰退に焦点を当てて、多方面からその原因を考えた。その際、この貿易を独占していたレヴァント会社の貿易のやり方がどのようなものであったかを簡単に説明し、またレヴァント貿易の貿易統計を整理して貿易の推移と貿易品目の内容を明確にする作業を行った。レヴァント貿易のあり方と貿易品目の推移が明らかにするのは、商業革命期のレヴァント貿易はイスタンブル・アレッポ・イズミル三都市での英国産毛織物とレヴァント産生糸の交換という取り引きに極端にかたよっていた事実である。一つの貿易形態に極端に依存していた英国のレヴァント貿易は、一八世紀のフランス産毛織物の急激なレヴァント市場参入と、英国内でのレヴァント産生糸の需要の低下の影響を決定的に受けて衰退したのであった。そして、衰退を招き寄せることとなったこの取り引きの偏向は、英国のレヴァント貿易が一握りの商人集団によって掌握されており、貿易のスタイルが硬直化していたことに原因が求められるであろう。

English trade overseas grew rapidly from the 1660s. The English Levant trade, however, began to stagnate and decline during the 18th century, contrary to other trends. In this essay, the author discusses the stagnation and decline of the Levant trade during the English commercial revolution as well as the various causes which precipitated this phenomenon. The author explains how the Levant Company operated its trade monopoly. She provides statistics concerning Levant trade in order to clarify the volume and content of the trade conducted as well as its eventual transition. Most trading during the commercial revolution consisted of bartering English cloth for raw silk in the three cities of Istambul, Aleppo and Izmir. Thus, the English Levant trade depended on a single trading pattern. It was natural that it declined during the 18th century when a large quantity of French cloth flooded the Levant market and the demand for Levant raw silk decreased in England. The fact that the company was long controlled by a handful of traders who became increasingly inflexibile was one of the leading causes of the decline of the Levant trade.
