<論説>有孔玉、石斧をめぐって

Abstract

中国では新石器時代から板状の斧の刃に円い孔のある類があり、青銅器の発達する殷、西周時代にもその伝統がたどられる。孔は刃が柄から抜け落ちるのを防ぐ機能を持ったに違いないが、そのためのものとしては過度に大きなものが早くからある。象徴的な意味があったからである。孔の周囲や孔から上方三方向に線を引いものが古くより知られる。前三千年紀の遺物で孔の下に当時の神の顔を刻した遺物の存在が知られた。これによって孔はこの神の象徴する日、月の光明の象徴であることが確かめられた。殷、西周時代にも青銅製の有孔斧が作られ、首切り用の大型品がある。孔の所が虎の口や鮫の口に作られるものがあり、虎の口の代りに虎やスッポンの全身像が象られる例もある。夫々刑殺、大陰の星座の神である。孔のあるべき所が「明」を意味する図柄になった例もある。いずれも「明畏」(善を顕わし、悪を威す) という意味をもったものと考えられる。

The tradition of constructing stone and jade axes with hole originated in the neolithic age and continued through the bronze age culture of the Shang-Zhou eras. These axes are pierced by a large hole which was too large to have been used for utilitarian purposes, such as attaching a handle. Instead, this hole is infused with symbolic meaning. By comparing a neolithic axe with rays extending, from the hole in three directions and another axe, dating from 3000 BC, which represents a divine visage, one can ascertain that the hole represents the light of the sun and moon, which is symbolic of the deity. Some executioners' axes, of a simlar pattern and dating from the Shang-Zhou eras, have a hole decorated with either a shark's or tiger's mouth. At times, a small tiger or turtle signifying a zodiacal deity which symbolize execution and big Yin (陰) respectively, ornament the inside of the hole. Furthermore, on some axes, the hole has been replaced by the character for brightness (明), a motif which implies that the axes symbolized the 'promotion of good and chastisement of evil' (明畏).
