<論説>長方板革綴短甲と三角板革綴短甲 : 変遷とその特質

Abstract

古墳時代中期前半を代表する武具である長方板革綴短甲と三角板革綴短甲は、その出現が「甲冑の定型化」と評価されるなど、甲冑の総体的変遷において画期をなす重要な形式である。しかしながら、これまで総合的な検討が加えられたことはなかった。本稿では、脇部に使用された地板の形状に着目して両形式の変遷をそれぞれ検討し、技術の共通性などに基づいて、その生産時期における関係や設計の系統における関係を考察した。その結果、両形式の生産時期がほぼ併行することを追証するとともに、三角板革綴短甲はシンボリックな意味をもつ三角形の配列を表現する必要性に応じて長方板革綴短甲の設計系統から派生した形式であると想定した。また、その過程において、生産性重視の度合いについての両形式の相違を指摘し、技術の進化論的な変化のみが甲冑の変遷を規定しているのではないことを示した。

This paper is concerned with the changes of two types of iron cuirasses, the chohoban kawatoji tanko and the sankakuban kawatoji tanko excavated from the tombs of the first half of the mid-Kofun period (From the late fourth century to the mid fifth century). The chohoban kawatoji tanko is a cuirass sewn by rectangular iron pieces while sankakuban kawatoji tanko is a cuirass sewn by triangular iron pieces. By closely examining the number and shape of the iron pieces which indicates the stage of development of forging technique, we can draft the typology of each kind of cuirasses here. The validity of this draft is also proved by the investigation result of the excavated assemblages of relics associated in the tombs. Through these examinations, we can clarify the following points: 1) Two types of cuirasses were produced nearly in the same period; 2) The design of the sankakuban kawatoji tanko was derived from that of the chohoban kawatoji tanko; 3) The evolution of the chohoban kawatoji tanko directly reflected the development of the forging technique, while that of the sankakuban kawatoji tanko failed to do this because the iron pieces of the latter were fixed in triangular shape. Hence we can deduce that the production of the chohoban kawatoji tanko focused on its production rate, but the sankakuban kawatoji tanko was produced as the symbol of magic particularly regarding the triangular shape of its iron pieces.
