<論説>朝鮮社会の近代的変容と女子日本留学 : 一九一〇～一九四五年

Abstract

植民地本国の「知の生産システム」に依存せざるを得なくなった朝鮮では、東京を頂点とする「教育ヒエラルキー」が形成されていった。朝鮮の小さな村と東京を結ぶ「教育通路」が出来上がり、人々は植民地本国に知識や学歴を求めてその道を進んでいった。女子留学生はその道を歩む新しい集団としてあらわれた。植民地下朝鮮の女性にとって、日本留学は社会進出の重要な通路になっていった。 留学の動機は様々であったが、日本留学は一定の人々の間で共有される文化的行為として定着していった。つまり、人々は「教育ヒエラルキー」を上へ、上へ進んでいこうとし、より進んだ都会の空気を吸うために、中心部に編入されうる資質や資格を求めて、東京に流れ込んでいった。 日本の官民両者の立場からは、留学を文化交流として捉える観点はなかったが、それは朝鮮社会に新しい文化を伝播する重要な通路になっていった。中心文化が朝鮮の小さな村の隅々まで運ばれ、その中心文化を構成する様々な価値が植民地の人々に伝播されていった。その結果、人々はより進んだ東京に学びに行くことを憧れ、さらにそれを当たり前な行為として認識するようになった。

In Korea, dependent as it was on the "knowledge production system" of the Colonial metropolis, an "education hierarchy" formed that had its pinnacle in Tokyo. A veritable "education road" came into being that linked the tiny village in Korea with Tokyo, a road along which people trod in pursuit of knowledge and academic achievement. Women foreign students emerged as a new group making its way along that road. To Korean women under colonialism, study in Japan was an important vehicle to social advancement. Although individual motivation varied, study in Japan was commonly seen as cultural behavior by a certain strata of people. Thus those seeking to rise higher and higher up the "education hierarchy" made their way to Tokyo in pursuit of the qualities and qualifications that would enable them to be admitted into the inner circle so that they might breathe in the air of the culturally advanced metropolis. While neither the government -General of Korea nor the Japanese people were in a position to seize the opportunity of these foreign students for cultural exchange, the students' stay in Japan provided an important means of disseminating a new culture in Korean society. The culture of the metropolis was carried to the remotest villages of Korea, and the values which constituted the culture of the metropolis were disseminated among the people of the colony. This increased even more the attraction of study in Tokyo, making it seem to be a matter of course.
