<論説>奈良時代の鬼面文鬼瓦 : 瓦葺技術からみた平城宮式鬼瓦・南都七大寺式鬼瓦の変遷

Abstract

現在までの瓦研究は軒瓦を対象とすることが多く、瓦当文様や製作技法の分析が主流を占めてきた。そのため、「屋根に葺く」という瓦本来の用途を意識した研究は少なく、棟や妻など屋根の細部において瓦葺技術と深く関わる道具瓦の研究はほとんどない。特に鬼瓦は棟との関係の深さから、瓦葺技術の水準が表れやすい。本稿では、奈良時代に平城宮とその周辺寺院で使用された平城宮式鬼瓦と南都七大寺式鬼瓦を取り上げ、鬼瓦を固定する際に重要な抉りの形態と、鬼瓦の大きさとが、棟の種類や規模に対応しているという視点で検討し、変遷を明らかにした。この結果を踏まえて、当時の屋根構造や瓦葺技術について考察し、鬼瓦の形態と製作技術が、造営組織の拡充を背景としながら奈良時代を通じて段階的に改良し続けられていたこと、とりわけ、笵で製作するという制約のある鬼瓦を異なる棟の種類や規模に合わせて据えることが志向されていた状況を具体的に明らかにした。

In the Nara period, two groups of Demon-faced ridge-end tiles usually called oni-gawara 鬼瓦, Heijokyu 平城宮 Palace style and Nantositidaiji 南都七大寺 seven great temples style, were used in and around the capital. They were the first ridge-end tiles mass produced by molding. Until now, the design has been a popular subject in the study of ridge-end tiles. But, the ridge-end tiles have been studied less than eave tiles, flat tiles, or round tiles. Therefore, focusing upon the functional side of these tiles, which is roofing, might provide a new and intriguing standpoint study. Investigating varieties and changes of functional features will reveal the developmental process in Nara period tile molding. Such functional features are the shape, the formation of the hole gouged out at the base, and the ways of size adjustment for the various kinds or sizes of ridges. The expansion of constructors' organizations can be one reason for its development. It is also presumable that the artisans engaged in manufacturing the ridge-eng tiles of Heijokyu Palace and the artisans engaded in manufacturing the ride-end tiles of Nantositidaiji temples somehow interacted, exchanging information about the latest techniques.
