<論説>一七〇九年イエズス会士レジスの沿海地方調査

Abstract

一七〇九年に清の康煕帝は、新しい中国本土と周辺地域の地図(『皇輿全覧図』) を製作するために、レジスらイエズス会士の調査隊を、東北地区とアムール下流地方に派遣した。一行はニングタから、直接アムール方面に向かわず、沿海地方(沿海州) の南部を迂回して、測量を行ないながらアムール川の下流へと向かった。その結果かれらは時期を逸して、寒気のために前進できなくなり、アムール川河口の手前で引き返すことになった。 わたしは、レジスらがわざわざ沿海地方に入った理由は、ヨーロッパで論争のあったエゾ問題を解明することにあったと考える。当時エゾ(北海道) は、大陸の一部かそれとも独立の島かで、見解が分かれていたが、どちらの説もエゾが朝鮮の東北付近、あるいは本州の北方にあるという点では一致していた。そこでレジスは自ら朝鮮の東北部まで出かけて、そこがエゾであるかどうかを確かめようとしたのである。この調査においてレジスは、沿海地方の周辺にアイヌの存在を確認できなかったので、沿海地方はエゾではなく、エゾは日本に近い島であると結論した。 レジスらの調査は、エゾ研究の転換点となり、それ以来エゾを大陸の一部と考える仮説は退潮して、島であるという説が有力になった。

In 1709 Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty dispatched an investigating commission, which included such Jesuit Fathers as Regis, in order to draw new maps of the Amur district. The party went through the Northeastern district to the town of Ningguta and then they went around the Maritime Province and left for the lower reaches of Amur river. Because they spent much time and it became colder, they could not advance toward the mouth and turned back. I think that the party expressly went into the Maritime Province in order to solve the Yezo problem which was disputed in Europe. In those days some people thought that the Yezo district was part of the Eurasian Continent. Others thought it an island, but both people supposed similarly that it lied to the northeast in the direction of Korea, or north in the direction of the main island of Japan. Therefore Father Regis planned to go to the Maritime Province to investigate firsthand whether it was the Yezo district. As he could not confirm the existence of the Ainu people in this investigation, he concluded that the Maritime Province was not Yezo, and that Yezo was an island near Japan. His investigation became a turning point of the research into the Yezo problem, since then people came to accept the hypothesis that Yezo was an island.
