Abstract

Dubious of previous interpretations of the "Enchinzokusei keizu, " a genealogical chart (referred to in this article as the "Wake Keizu"), possessed by Onjoji Temple, I have attempted my own interpretation. As a result, I have been able to indicate that within the extant "Wake Keizu, " there are mistakes that were made when the chart was first bound as wen as scribal errors made when it was first created. Having made corrections to existing interpretations, I proceeded to examine the genealogical consciousness reflected in the "Wake Keizu". Due to the fact the style of one section of entries in the "Wake Keizu" bears a strong resemblance to the 'Inariyama Tekkenmei' sword inscription, I also examined sword inscriptions and found that both the inscriptions and the "Wake Keizu" display patriarchal lineages. This demonstrates that an awareness of patriarchal lineage can be traced back to prior to the latter term of the 5th century, when the swords were inscribed.
