| 抄録: | Charles Babbage was an English polymath in the Victorian age. In his student days at Cambridge University, he organized the Analytical Society with his colleagues J. F. W. Herschel and George Peacock. The purpose of this Society was to introduce the Continental notations to England. Babbage left an unpublished manuscript entitled "Essays on the Philosophy of Analysis". This manuscript is very important to understand English mathematical scene in his age. "Of Induction" is the forth essay in the manuscript. In this essay Babbage considered induction through treatises of Euler, these of Lagrange and correspondences of Leibniz and Johan Bernoulli. Babbage claims that we had to pay attentions to "an highly probable to necessarily truth" in reasoning of induction. Also Babbage introduces new mathematical notations in this chapter. Unfortunately his attempts does not have much success. |
