Abstract

This paper examines the treatment of Maria Bertram in Mansfield Park. She has been criticised on a common presumption as an immoral character in contrast to and in favour of Fanny Price, but has never been fully illuminated. Focusing on her circumstances offers new insights into her character, and it contributes to an understanding of the work. This paper begins with examination of the oppression by her family. It then considers the anguish of her engagement; finally, it traces the punishment she receives. Her repeated utterances "restraint" and the punishments associate with imprisonment. This paper appeals, against too harsh punishment, for fair judgement on Maria, who has been imprisoned since the publication (1814).
