<論説>明治教育史の思想的背景

Abstract

わが国における近代思想史の発展過程において、教育制度の普及発達という広汎なその地盤が、従来あまり顧られなかつたことは、その記述をとかく一面的なものとした理由の一つである。人民の欲求と思惟がいかなる型態のうえに形成せられ、それが思想界の動向に対して、いかに反映せられてゆくものであろうかという問題の検討は、日本近代化の一般的事実のうちに、近代思想の発展を把握する前提をなすものであろうと思われる。したがつて本稿においては、明治初年における普通教育の制度史的発達を、その思想史的意義においてとらえてみた。その後における教育制度および教育思想の発展は、職業教育を中心とする問題として他日にゆずる。

Needless to say that education played a great role in the formation of the modern thought in Japan, but many attempts have failed to define it on account of their depreciation of its background. On what basis the popular desire was formed and how it was reflected in the general trend of thought----these are the fundamental questions with which we have to do in considering the development of modern thought, especially in connection with the general modernization of this country. The object of this article is to illustrate some of the institutional developments of common education from the ideological standpoint. The development thereafter will later be treated separately as a question of professional education.
