<論説>明治以後の京都市域形成に関する都市地理学的考察

Abstract

都市周辺部の都市化すなわちアーバニーゼーションは資本主義の発展に併行して必然的におこる地域現象である。ところが近時の日太の都市は都市化せられざる地域を市域に編入せしめる傾向が強い。従つて市域 (City-Region) 必ずしも都市域 (Urban District) そのものを意味しない。市域中に閉曲せられた都市圏の地域構造を吟味検討することが都市地理学に与えられた一つの課題となる所以である。筆者はいま歴史的都市京都の明治以後における景観の変貌を地域的に概観し、京都市域における都市圏の成層構造を人口密度、蔬菜栽培地、屎尿汲取配給圏、交通機関、工場の分布等を例にあげて考えてみた。結果京都の場合もまた明治二二年度の市域を核とした成層構造を形成はするが、都市重心が次第に西南に移行したこと、都市域の範囲は地形や等時線に合致することが多く、それは大正七年度から昭和六年度に到る市域で終り、漸次外周に成層圏をなして、ヒンターランドに終ることを述べた。京都は百万都市であり歴史的都市ではあるが、一部ではより生産的な巨大都市大阪の特殊な衛星都市的性格をも有しており、京都市の理解は旧城下町出身の日本の地方都市理解にも重要な鍵をあたえる。

With the development of capitalism goes the urbanization of the city fringe. But in the present Japan we mean by the city also those unurbanized districts around the city. The city region does not necessarily involve urban district only. So there is still room for urban-geography to deal with the regional structure of the urban district involved in the city region. In the present paper I attempted at the survey of the processes of the formation of the urban district in Kyoto city, tracing the changes of Landschaft after the Meiji Era, exemplifying demographic density, transportation facilities, manufacturing district and those areas for commercial agriculture. By this analysis we can say that the city region of 1889 is the core of Kyoto around which the later developments clustered but at the same time we can clearly witness that the center of the city moved west-southward. The present outline of the urban area often coincides with the isochronomen and ends with the outskirt of the city region from 1918 to 1931. Kyoto is of course a Millionenstadt with flavor of the ancient capital, but at the same time a satellite city of Osaka, what is called Riesenstadt. So the study of the formation of Kyoto will be of some service to the understanding of the local cities of old origins.
