<論説>古墳の発生の歴史的意義

Abstract

考古学上では古墳をもつて一つの時代を代表させているが、わが国の墓制の沿革上からみれば、古墳はその一時期に一般の墓制とは別に出現した、特殊な葬法にすぎない。それは古墳が貴族のための墓制であるからである。しかし古墳は貴族の発生よりおくれて、貴族の権威の革新をまつて発生した。すなわち世襲制の発生によつてその地位と権力とを保証された首長が、伝世の寶鏡の保管によって象徴されるような、在来の司祭的権威への依存を必要としなくなつた時に、古墳は発生し、寶鏡の伝世は絶たれたのである。この現象は大和政権の勢力の伸張につれて各地にひろがつたが、地方における古墳の発生には、それらの地方首長に対する畿内からの同笵鏡の分与によつて確かめられるように、常に大和政権との結びつきが先行した。古墳を発生させた首長権世襲制の発生は、同時にかかる意味における外的承認によって裏付けられていたのである。なお同笵鏡の分有関係において畿内が中心的位置を占めていることは、三世紀中葉以来の政治的情勢を反映するものであろう。

Archaeologically mound-tombs may represent one epoch. However, they appeared as a special type of burial, separated from the common burials, at a certain period of burial history. Those tombs were built only for the nobles. And the mound-tombs came into being later than the establishment of the nobility, i. e. after the strengthening of their authority. When the nobles came to be hereditary local rulers and no more needed to be dependant upon such a previous priestly authority as symbolized by the inherited mirror (Denseikyo 傳世鏡), the mound-tombs were born and accordingly the hereditary mirrors were forsaken. This tendency prevailed all over Japan side by side with the developement of the power of the Yamato Government. The generation of local moundtombs always followed some political connection with the Yamato Government on the side of local rulers. This is proved by the fact that there were found Dohankyo (同笵鏡)--mirrors cast in the same mould--given from the central government to local nobles. Thus the establishment of the hereditary system of the local nobility was backed by the recognition of the central government. The fact that Kinai (Yamato Prevince) was the center of the distribution of Dohankyo would explain the political situation as a whole since the middle of the 3rd century A. D.
