<論説>アメリカ旧南部における非奴隷所有農民 (ノン・スレイヴホルダー) (上) : 第二次アメリカ革命の構造把握のために

Abstract

アメリカ資本主義の全面的な発展の道をきりひらいた「第二次アメリカ革命」は、南北、両地域社会の抗争をめぐる広汎な社会戦争(ソーシャルウオー)であった。したがって、その「地域性(セクショナリティ)」の解明こそは革命の構造把握にとつて不可欠の前提となる。この意味で、資本主義高潮期にもかかわらず、奴隷制社会たる旧南部が、ながく「頑固な南部(ソリッド・サウス)」を形成しえたのはなぜかという問題は、われわれの興味をひく。この場合、旧南部の「地域性」の形成をば、社会構成的諸関係から析出することが重要課題となるであろう。旧南部社会の圧倒的多数を占める非奴隷所有農民(ノン・スレイヴホルダー)の分析をこころみたこの小論は右のような意図をふまえたものにほかならない。

The Second American Revolution, which widely opened the way for the development of American capitalism, was an enormous social war between South and North. Accordingly the study of the sectionality of both sides is an indespensable premise to fully understand the revolution. Thus teh fact that teh Old South, a slavery, society could maintain the "solid South" much further in spite of the high tide of capitalism evokes an interesting question. In this case, it would be an important problem to annalyze the "sectionality" of the Old South in its social structure. This essay which intends to clarify the situation of the non-slaveholders quite a majority of South at the period, resulted from the considerations of those problems above.
