<論説>中世思想史における天地創造説の位置 (思想史特集)

Abstract

創造記と名付けられる旧約聖書冒頭の天地創造説話は、それ自身偉大な文学作品であるが、近代以前のヨーロッパ人には、その信仰生活の支柱、かつ科学的宇宙観の源泉でもあった。特にキリスト教神学が支配的であった中世においては、この説話の人心にもたらした影響は大きく、創造神への信仰は、同時に被造者としての人間の位置の認識を呼びさました。かりに披造者意識とよぶこのような自覚は種々の形で捉えられるが、全体として、中世の精神をつつましいものとするに役立った。目に見えない思想の細流であるが、これがどのようにして中世の社会を流れていったかを跡づけようとするのがこの小論の目的である。しかし順序として創造記がいかにして成立し、いかなる構造をもつかを明らにするために近隣諸民族の類同神話とも比較し、かつ中世に至るまでの創造記を中心としたヘブライ宗教の変遷をたどり、ギリシア思想との融合の形でカトリシズムが形成される過程を述べた。

Genesis in the Old Testament was the foundation for the faith of medieval Europeans and that for their physical cosmic view. This creation story greatly influenced their minds and the belief in the creative God produced their consciousness as the created. This sort of consiousness, expressed in various forms, caused the minds of the medieval Europeans to be modest and decent. The main theme of this article is to trace the tradition of this modest spiritual trend. In this connection, however, the description covers the comparison of Genesis with the like creative myths among neighboring peoples in order to clarify its birth and structure, furthermore, the history of Judaism and the making of Catholicism through the acceptance of Greek thought by Judaism.
