In the sixteenth century, as it is known, there was a group of Jinai-machi (寺内町) or cities within the temples in the development of the feudal cities in Japan. This essay treats the existence and structure of Tonda-bayashi (富田林) established on the Sô (惣) unionization of its inhabitants in its formation. The establishment of these lesser cities explains the development of peasant economy in the advanced area, and they prove to have developed their petitbourgeois market area as early as the first half of the seventeenth century and to have the starting-point by which the feudalism in the Shogunate era was disturbed. The establishment of the lesser cities in the sixteenth century, therefore, contrary to the common interpretation, appears also to prove the epoch that the feudalism in Japan was disturbed and reestablished as a centralized system, which appears to require further many-sided research of the character in Shoku-hô (織豊) administration. |
