Abstract

わが都市は多分に農村的要素をもつ。その統一的把握はむつかしい。封建政権においては、その支配てつていのためには、農村酌要素との分離をはかるものである。封建支配権力が、人工都市として建設した城下町においては、その分離が比較的可能だつたが、これも在郷町の転用であつたり、城下町も農業的要素を持たざるを得なかつたばあいが多いし、たえずそのすう勢が加わるから、統一的把握はむつかしい。住民の自治的共同体として成立した「惣」においても、都市ではかなりその構造に複雑さがあつたはずである。しかし、そこに共通な意識と目的とを抽出して「惣」町を形成した。そのあたり「惣」の本質が見られよう。 都市が封建支配権力の照射をあびたとき、その「惣」の支配権力への対応のしかたは、いちように反撥であつたろうか。「惣」の性格がそこにもあらわれよう。もとより封建支配権力は、「惣」の封建的支配下における活動をはかるものである。そこに「惣」の封建化が進むし、この観点においては純化がある。それは都市の純化とともに進むことは容易に理解されよう。 都市の純化については、都市史料の欠如のためにその見とおししか得られない。しかもその純化には、いはば自然的進展もあつたことは明かであろう。封建支配権力、なかんずく織豊政権の都市純化についても、その前代の経過が明かにならぬので、明確を欠くおそれもある。ときに過大視も生じよう。ともかく、これらの難点をふまえて、封建都市の劃期としての織豊時代の都市を見よう。

It is difficult for us to understand our Japanese cities, for they have very much of rural element. "Sô" (惣) as a autonomous community of inhabitants became "Sô" (惣) towns under the influence of common sense and objective in cities, though their contents are considerably complex. Such " Sô " (惣), under the light of feudal authority, did not unanimously resist it, but took a complicated reaction, resulted in feudalization of "Sô" and purification of cities. Asits process, however, has not fully been cleared for lack of its original sources, in present conditions it is difficult to clearly understand the purification of cities by the Oda-Toyotomi (織・豊) administration. In this article such difficulties are to be overcome by using some new sources in studying cities in the era as an epoch of feudal cities.
