<論説>アメリカ革命史の歴史

Abstract

フランス革命とならんで十九世紀自由主義運動の端緒をなしたアメリカ革命はどのような原因で起り、また十三植民地の自主・独立運動とその内部の政治・社会緊張とはどういう関連をもったか。これらは古くして新しい、アメリカ革命史上の基本問題である。「インピアリアル・スクール」によって科学的な操作が始められてから優に二世代以上を経過しているにかかわらず、今日イェール大学の E・S・モーガン教授が次のようにいっているゆえんであろう。「われわれは、どの特定の説をも完全な説明にまで敷衍してはならない。われわれは問いつづけなければならない。なぜならわれわれは未だ、アメリカ革命がどういうものであったかを十分知っていないからである」と。本稿は革命史の研究発達史を簡単にたどりつつ、主として以上二つの基本問題を検討し、将来への一応のパースペクティヴを与えようとするものである。従って革命史の研究発達史というよりは、むしろその問題点の指摘が中心となるであろう。

What were the main causes of the American Revolution which resulted in the liberalist-movements in the 19th century together with the French Revolution?; and what functional relation was there between the movenents for home-rule and independence of the Thirteen Colonies, and the socio-political tension within the Colonies ?; these are still old and new basic problems in the study of the Revolution. This is the reason why Professor E. S. Morgan of Yale University says to-day such as following, while two generations more have passed since the publication of the objective writings by so-called "Imperial School of the Colonial Period" : "We must not expand particular insights into a complete explanation. We must continue to ask, for we still do not fully know, what the Revolution was". In this paper the writer, tracing briefly the process how the history of the Revolution has been written from the very beginning of the Republic, will examine chiefly those two basic problems, and will have a perspective for the present in studying the Revolution.
