<論説>イギリスにおけるローマンタウンの歴史地理学的性格 : その分布、位置と町割を主にしてみた場合

Abstract

ローマンウォールやローマンロード、さらに地方の核心をなすローマンタウンの分布や局部的立地、町割等を検討してみると、今もなおイギリス地方都市のそれらの上に少なからず生き永らえているように思える。ミリタリイゾーンとシヴィルゾーンとの区別やフロンティアーの北進、さらにローマンタウンそのものの性格については単なる行政的歴史的な説明だけでは不充分であつて、局部地形や自然的環境にみられる地域的理解が必要である。本文は集落地理学における立地、形態論等といつた A・B・C 的な事項に関する研究はむしろ歴史地理学的なアプローチによつて一層深めらるべきことを例証する。つまり″時の断面″における地域性の描出といつた狭義の歴史地理学のほかに、現在都市理解の上にも無視出来ないのは歴史的都市の地理学的研究の面であることを意図してのローマンタウンの紹介である。又同じ島国である日本の場合、ローマンタウンに似たものは律令的な地方都市たる国府や駅の問題であるが本文の意図の中には、このような問題をもふくんでいる。

We must often use the historical approach to study the English urban geography, because must of the modern English citie and towns originated in their situations and town plannings from the Roman Age as well as their Roads. The aims of historical geography are to reconstruct the geographical aspects in historical age and to research the geographical connection with the modern landscapes. In this monograph, I discussed, for the first time the geographical meanings of the three Roman frontiers and the administrative division of military and civil zone. I think that these administrative divisions much more influenced by the physical basis of modern England, in spite of their more or less military purposes. For examples, the military zone was belonging to Highland region in general and characterized by meagre environments and the Hadrian Wall was constructed by choosing the shortest distance between two seasides and yet the location of Corbrige as the fort was chosen as geographically better situation. Secondly, we can find the Location of main Roman towns were chosen also the terminal point of river navigation or of tide. In such case, the settlement usually situated on the Terance like high flatface. Thirdly, we can find even now many modern town plannings succeeded from the Roman Age. I explained such cases in Colchester, Gloucester, Chester, etc. In general the study of Roman town are similer with that of ancient local capitals in Japan. My another purpose of this monograph was the study of comparative historical geography between Japan and England.
