<論説>コンスタンティノポリスの建設とその意義

Abstract

コンスタンティヌスに依る新首都建設は、同じく彼に依るクリスト教の公認と並んで爾後のローマ帝国、そしてヨーロッパ世界を変貌せしめた最も重要な事件として特筆されねばならない。 しかしいかなる理由で新首都建設が意図されたかという問題に対しては、なお定説なく、一方ではこれを専ら (1) 軍事的・地理的・政治的事情の下で考察する立場と、他方 (2) 新首都建設をローマ市との緊張関係においてとらえ、宗教的考察の必要を主張する見解をめぐり顕著な対立が見られている。 四世紀の帝国の国際状勢に目を向ける時、我々は第一の立場を承認せねばならない。しかし、当時ニコメデイア、テサロニカ、シルミウムの諸都市が同じく政治・軍事・地理的意義の故に帝都になりながら、なおコンスタソティノポリスの様に「永遠の都」「第二のローマ」となり得なかつたことを考える時、更に宗教的考察の必要性に迫られるのである。 以下私は第二の立場に立ちつつ、就中これをローマ史内の問題として考察し、新首都が異教都市ローマへの対抗都市つまリクリスト教的世界都市として建設されたことに及びたい。

The construction of a new capital by Constantinus, along with the authorization of Christianity by him, must be marked as the most important event that changed the later Roman Empire and the European world. There is no established theory, however, about the reason why the construction of the new capital was to be planned; one is on the stand of studying it under the military, geographical, and political circumstances, the other insisted the necessity of studying the religious aspect, grasping its construction in the serious relation of the city of Rome. When one turns his eyes to the international circumstances of the Empire in the forth century, he must accept the former stand. When we think over the fact that Nicomedia, Tesaronica, and Sirumium in that time became the capital in turn for their political, military, and geographical importance, but could not become 'Eternal City' or 'the Second Rome', we feel keenly the necessity of the further religious investigation. Then, taking on the second stand, first of all we are going to study the problem within the Roman history, and come to the construction of the new capital as a christian world city against the pagan city of Rome.
