<論説>トゥーキューディデースの歴史記述の意図 : κτημα ες αιει をめぐって

Abstract

トゥーキューディデースは自らの『ヒストリアイ』を、一時の称讃目当てのものではなく、「永遠の所有」として書き纒めたと述べる。その意味するところは今日まで種々の方面から理解されてきた。或はその科学的な歴史記述の故に、或は永遠不変のピュシスとの関連から。しかし、それらには幾分近代史学からの類推による理解が常に含まれていて、トゥーキューディデース自身が真に意図したものは捉えられていないように思われる。 私はここに「ヒストリアイ」自身を再吟味し、その精神的構造を分析して、彼の歴史記述の真の意図を明らかにし、そこよりひるがえつて「永遠の所有」の意味を理解しようと試みる。 彼の真の意図は、永遠不変の人間性が事情の変化に応じて如何に現れるかを、現在の事情の中に糺明しようとするにある。現在の事実のみが当時にあつては正確な智識をあたえ得るものであり、かつてない多くの災厄を含んだぺロポンネーソス戦役こそ人間性を多方面から考察する機会をあたえる。その正確な記述が、後世不変の人聞性の故に類似の事象が起るとき、豫備智識となり事を処する先見の明を養う助けとなる。勇をもちこの先見の明をもつて指導者が事に当れば、誉れあるポリスを後世に遺すこともできる。かかるに精神のもとに、事実の正確な記述が「永遠の所有」となるとトゥーキューディデースは考えていたように思われる。

Thukydides said he wrote his 'Historiai' in behalf of 'eternal possession' not for a temporal applause. His intention has been understood from various aspects to this day; in his scientific attitude to write history, or in the relation of everlasting and constant phusis. These interpretations, however, ever included the understanding somewhat by analogy in the methods of modern historical study, which makes clear understanding of his intention very difficult. This article tries to understand the meaning of 'eternal possession' through analysis of his true intention, by revising his 'Historiai'. His true intention lies in enlightement of a concrete and present correspondence of everlasting and constant humanness to the succeeding transition. Correct knowledge should be supplied by the then fact, the Peloponnesos War, which followed many disasters that ever had and gave chances of many-sided investigation in human character. The constancy of humanness helps one to have foresight corresponding to similar facts. Supported by the spirit that a brave and farseeing leader could make a honourable polis in history, he thought correct writing of facts made 'eternal possession'.
