<論説>幕末国学思想の一類型 : 大国隆正についての断面的考察

Abstract

大国隆正がとりあげられる理由は、彼が武士階層に属し、明治新政府の中枢に登場する国学者の首領であつて、政治的動向の未詳である農村のそれらと異つて、維新後の行動がはつきりしているので、彼の思想を究明することによつて幕末国学と明治維新との関係の一端が明らかになると考えられるということである。大国の思想が他の国学者達と異なる点は、彼等が全ての現実をその内容と関係なしに神々の所為としてうけいれるとの論理をもつに対し、彼は徳川体制を動かざるものとして支持する―それが私的土地所有を核とする封建制であつて、天皇が全国を直轄支配する集権制でないことを理由として―ところにある。彼はここから天皇の行為をも批判・規制しうる論理を設定する。このような思想をもつ彼を中心とする国学者が政体の変革としての明治維新への運動に関与したものとは考えられないが、明治政府に協力するのは結局は神々の所為への服従であるからであり、又新政府によつて封建制が克服されると共に、彼等が時流から脱落していくのは当然である。

We treat the case of Ôkuni Takamasa 大国隆正, because he belonged to the samurai class, and was the chief of Kokugaku 国学 scholars in the core of the Meiji 明治 new government; and so we can partly recognize the relation between Kokugaku in the later Edo era and the Meiji Restoration, by researching his thoughts, for the account of his very movement after the Restoration which was different from rural scholars' unknown movement in politics. His difference with other scholars who accepted all realities indifferent to their contents as acts of God consisted in his supporting the Tokugawa System as the unmoved--as it was the feudal system based on parsonal landholdings, not on the central government directly ruled by the Emperor. Then he set his logic by which he could criticise or regulate even the Emperor's acts. Though the Kokugaku scholars led by him with his logic cannot be thought to have joined the movement to the Meiji Restoration as a reformation of body politic, his cooperation for the Meiji government means their subjection to the God's acts after all, and it is natural that they sloughed off the new current, the time the new government conquered the feudal system.
