<研究ノート>「ルーシ」に関するイブン・ホルダドベーの記事について

Abstract

九世紀中頃のアラビア作家、イブンホルダドベーは、その著『道里記・郡国志』の中で、次の如く述べている。「ルーシ商人はサカリバの一種族である」と。いわゆる「ルーシ問題」における反ノルマニストは、この「サカリバ」をスラヴ人だけを意味するものとなし、ホルダドベーはルーシがスラヴ人であつたとはつきり言つていると主張する。しかし、「サカリバ」がスラヴ人のみを指すのであれば、ホルダドベーの記事は他のアラビア作家たち、たとえば、イブン・ファドラン、イブン・ロステー、マスウーヂ、イスタクリ、ガルデーヂなどの説く所と矛盾する。この場合、われわれはホルダドベーを確実なものと見なし得ないであろう。またもし、「サカリバ」がもつと広い意味内容を持つのであれば、われわれはホルダドベーの記事が、ルーシ＝スラヴ人という等式を証明するものではないと言い得よう。

An Arabic writer of the middle of the 9th century, Ibn-Khurdadhbih relates in his work "The Routes and Kingdom" (Kitab-al-Masalik Wal-Mamalik) as follows: "The Rus' merchants are a sort of Saqaliba." The anti-Normanists in the so-called "Problem of Rus'" assume the term "Saqaliba" in this passage as the Slaves exclusively, and assert that Khurdadhbih speaks distinctly that the Rus' were Slays. But if the term "Saqaliba" were applied to the Slavs only, Ibn-Khurdadhbih's description is contradictory to that of the other Arabic writers, such as e.g. Ibn-Fadhlan, Ibn-Rusta, Mas'udi, al-Istakhri, Gardezi, etc. In this case we could not regard Khurdadhbih as a credible source. And if that term had a wider meaning, we could not prove by this Khnrdadhbih's description that the Rus' were equal to the Slaves.
