<論説>古代天皇の私的兵力について

Abstract

日本古代における天皇親衛軍の研究は、井上光貞氏が口火を切つて以来、急速に発達した。しかし、従来の研究では、天皇を中心とする大和朝廷の軍隊と、天皇に直属する私的軍隊との区別が明確にされていなかったように思われる。大化前代では、靱負軍と舎人軍とが天皇親衛軍の主要なものとされているが、私は、靱負軍は六世紀代に、天皇の私兵的な性格がうすくなり、朝廷の軍隊という公的性格をもちはじめ、このころから、より私的な天皇の軍隊として舎人軍が用いられるようになつたと考える。この両者は、律令制成立とともに五衛府の制に吸収され、公的な軍隊に化してしまうが、八世紀初頭に、早くも律令にみえない天皇の私的な兵力として授刀含人が設けられる。この制は以後曲折を経るが、授刀衛あるいは近衛府にまで発展する。古代天皇の性格を考えるには、このような天皇の私的軍隊の果した政治史上の役割を認識することが必要であると思う。

The study of the Tennô's 天皇 bodyguards in ancient Japan has rapidly developed since Mitsusada Inoue 井上光貞 lit the fuse, but it seems that in the former studies the distinction between the forces of the Yamato 大和 Court headed by Tennô and the private forces under the direct control of Tennô has not been clarified. Before Taika 大化, both the Yugei 靱負 force and the Toneri 舎人 force have been taken as the main force belonging to Tennô, but I think that the Yugei force grew to a slight character of the private force belonging to Tennô and a close character of the public force belonging to the Court in the sixth century, since then the Toneri force was used as a more private force belonging to Tennô. These two forces were absorbed into the system of Go-e-fu 五衛府 at the establishment of the Ritsuryô 律令 system. Yet as early as the beginning of the eighth century Jutô-toneri 授刀舎人 was established as a private force belonging to Tennô. This system, in the course of time, developed into Jutô-ei 授刀衛 or Konoe-fu 近衛府. To consider the character of the ancient Tennô, it is useful, I think, that we recognize the political part the private force belonging to Tennô played.
