<研究ノート>魏志倭人伝における前漢書の道里等書式の踏襲

Abstract

先に本誌の本年第三号に私は 「第二～三世紀における倭人の社会」 と題する小篇を発表するに当たり、魏志の倭人伝が従来不可解の書の如くになっている理由を二つあげ、その一は、この書の行程記事が一定書式で書かれているにかかわらず、学者各自の着想に任せた自由な読み方が行なわれていること、その二は、倭人伝が烏丸鮮卑東夷伝の末端の一節であるにかかわらず、独立の一書であるかの如き扱い方をされていることであるとした。そしてあの論文では倭人伝を烏丸鮮卑東夷伝の一部として読むことにより倭人の社会を考えたのであるが、今この拙稿では倭人伝に使用された書式が、前漢書の地理志・西域伝・西南夷伝などの道里等記載の書式を踏襲したものであることを冒頭に掲げた項目に従うて明らかにし、且それが女王国の国制にかんする法理と一致することを説き、正しい解読が何であるかについて考えた。殊に倭人伝難解の原因の―つが後漢書における誤解に由来することを指摘する。

The records about the roads in the Wei-chih-wo-jen-ch'uan 魏志倭人伝 have been interpreted at random, with some contradiction and incomprehensibility by scholars. But as every part of these records were written after the certain writing forms, we cannot read them so freely. That is, they ran after those of the Ts'ien-han-shu 前漢書. In the fours tates from Tsushima 対馬 to Ito 伊都 the continuing writing style, which was of used in the chapter of Yueh-ti 粤地 of Ti-li-chih 地理志 Ts'ien-han-shu 前漢書, was followed. The articles in the four states beyond Ito were written following the form used in the Si-yu-ch'uan 西域伝 of the same book. "Ten days by water, one month by land" shows the two different ways to Yamatai 邪馬台 from Ito as the starting-point. The relation between Yamatai and Queen state 女王国 and the meaning of "the brief descriptions of number of houses and ways and distances" can be understood by consulting the Si-yu-ch'uan 西域伝, and that of the description "north of Queen state" by consulting the Nan-man-ch'uan 南蛮伝. And these interpretations coincide with the study on leagal nature of Queen state or Wo-kuo 倭国. From these interpretations, we understand the misreading about the Wo-jen-ch'uan 倭人伝 is derived from the description of Wo 倭 of the Hou-han-shu 後漢書, the next old book concerning Wo after Wei-chih 魏志.
