<研究ノート>十五世紀の英国羊毛貿易に関する一考察 : イギリス重商主義の先駆について

Abstract

本稿は、一五世紀イギリスの羊毛貿易の動向を考察することによつて、カレー・ステーブル組合の独占の確立をあとづけようとした。それは、大きくいつて次の四つの重要な結果をもたらしたと考えられる。すなわち、外国商人に対するイギリス商人の保護、羊毛貿易における大商業資本の確立、王室の財政的基礎の提供、国内毛織物工業発展、これである。しかも、この傾向が現われる時期は、エドワード四世治世の前半期に当り、この点からわれわれは従来間題となってきたイギリス重商主義の開始期をほぼこの時点に求めたいと思う。

The aim of this article is to trace the development of the English wool trade in the fifteenth century which led to the establishment of the Staplers in Calais. The multifarious influences of this monopolistic trade were felt in every field of the political and economic history of the period, but main forces can be summed up as follows : the protection of English trade from the foreign interference, the boom of commercial capitalism, the growth of the woollen industry and last but not least the fostering of the royal finance. The crucial period of this change of the economic trend falls in the earlier part of Edward IVs' reign. The muchdiscussed origin of mercantilism is still to be sought, but it is not too much to say that this period ushered in the new age of English trade.
