<論説>中国古代における天と命と天命の思想 : 孔子から孟子に至る革命思想の発展

Abstract

孔子は天の存在を認めたが、それは不可知な神秘的存在であり、従って天の命も亦、人間からは窺知するを得ない、理知以外の存在であった。彼のいう仁は人の道であり、不可知な天命によって人事の結果がいかに左右されようとも、それによって信念を動揺させてはならないと教えた。これが 「知命」 の意味である。然るに墨子は天を正義の神とし、政治革命の如き大きな政治的変動も、天が主権者の行為の善悪に対して加える賞罰の結果だと説明した。併し実際にはこのような賞罰は必ずしも世上に実行されていない。次に現われた孟子は、政治革命は天の命によって起るが、それは人心の帰趨に従って起るとし、天命と歴史現象とを不可分なものと説明した。そして仁義を行うのは、外部にある利を得んがためではなく、天が人の心に生みつけた性の善なるに従うためであるとした。孔子から孟子への思想的発展は、中間に墨子の存在を考慮しなければ、正しい理解に到達できない。

According to K'ung-Tzŭ 孔子, T'ien 天 is in existence, but it is unknowable and mysterious; and so Ming 命 of T'ien also is an untouchable existence transcendental above reason. Jên 仁, what he called, is a human way of life, in which a man must, he taught, have an unmoved confidence, even though human affairs depend upon the unknowable T'ien-Ming 天命, this means "Chih-ming" 知命. But Mo-Tzŭ 墨子 took T'ien as a god of justice and explained that great political changes, like a political revolution, mean the result of prize or punishment which T'ien gives to the very act of the authority. But practically, such a prize or punishment is not always. practised in the world. Next scholar, Mêng-Tzŭ 孟子 remarked that though the political revolution is caused by the order of T'ien, depending upon the tendency of public opinion and explained that T'ien-Ming and historical phenomena are indivisible; and that Jên and I 義 are done, not to win the outer interest but to follow the nature of good which T'ien lays in the human mind. The development of thought from K'ung-tzŭ to Mêng-Tzŭ cannot be fully understood without consideration of Mo-Tzŭ existence between them.
