<論説>徂徠学の形成と中国思想 : 蘐園随筆を中心に

Abstract

元緑末年から享保初年にかけて、伊藤仁斎に対抗して荻生徂徠が創めた復古学・古文辞学は、中国の儒学史・文学史にも例を見ない功利主義的政治学・文芸学であるというのが従来の定説である。事実、徂徠自身も、中国の学問文芸の中で徂徠学形成に暗示を与えたものがあるとすれば、明朝の李攀龍・王世貞くらいのものであるといっている。しかし徂徠の『萱国随筆』や『徂徠文集』を見ると、先秦儒教、漢・六朝・唐・宋•明代の目星い中国古典や詩文の殆んどすべてがとりあげられていて、徂徠学の形成は中国儒学や文学を無視しては考えられないことを物語っている。極言すれば、徂徠の復古学は荀子・揚雄・永嘉学・永康学の換骨奪胎であり、古文辞学は李・王のみならず外にもより有効な学説を持つ明代文芸復古学派、及び唐代の韓愈・柳宗元、宋代の欧腸脩ら元祐党などの復古学の系列に連らなるものである。また徂徠が揚棄した周・張・程・朱の宋学も、実は老•仏に対する原始儒教復興運動であった。これら中国の思想や文学に対する深い理解と批判の上に徂徠学が形成されたのであるから、徂徠学研究の第一歩はここから始めなければならない。徂徠の主著『弁道』・『弁名』・『論語徴』などは、既に完成した徂徠学の成果であっても、徂徠学形成の依拠となった中国思想・文学を明示していない。その点、『萱園随筆』と『徂徠文集』は徂徠学形成過程の研究には最大の宝庫といえよう。

Restorationism and archaism, Ogyû Sorai 荻生徂徠 created against Ito Jinsai 伊藤仁斎 from the end of Genroku 元禄 to the beginning of Kyôho 享保, have been said to be the utilitarian politics and literature without percedent in the Chinese history of Confucianism and literature. In fact, he himself said that he owed, if any, only to Li-p'an-lung 李攀龍 or Wang-shih-chêng 王世貞 in the Ming 明 dynasty, but judging from his works, "Keien-zuihitsu" 蘐園随筆 or "Sorai-monjû" 徂徠文集, in which almost all the Chinese classics were quoted, the formation of his learning cannot be considered without the influence of the Chinese confucianism and literature. The study of his learning, based on the deep understanding and criticism of the Chinese thought or literature, should be started from this point; his works, "Ben-dô" 弁道, "Ben-mei" 弁名 and "Rongo-chô" 論語徴, were the results of his established learning, but they have no indication of the chinese source on which his learning was based. "Keien-zuihitsu" and "Sorai-monjû" would be the most important treasury for our study of the formation of Sorai's learning.
