<論説>日本啓蒙主義の凋落 : 福沢論吉の変貌

Abstract

これまで数えきれない福沢研究がなされてきたが、依然として解決されていない大きな問題点のひとつに、福沢の初期から後期にかけての変貌をどうとらえるか、ということがある。ここでは、福沢の明治七年頃から十四・五年頃までになされた変貌を、日本啓m蒙主義凋落の一環としてとらえ、主として政治的状況に彼がどう対応したか、その対応のしかたは彼の民衆観とどういう関係をもっているか、に焦点をあてつつ、その変貌の要因を明らかにせんとした。福沢の民衆観は、階級闘争の展開に応じて、啓蒙期からの変貌をもち、それは啓蒙的世界観から社会有機体的な世界観への転換をもたらしていった。ここでは、その変貌の軌跡と、思想構造を明らかにすることに主力をそそぎ、それときわめて深い関連にある他の思想潮流については捨象してある。

One of the still unsolved points in the innumerable articles on Fukuzawa 福沢 is how to grasp his change from the beginning to the latter term. This article explores the cause of his change from the 7th year around to the 14th or 15th year of Meiji 明治 as a link of decline of the Japanese enlightenment, focusing attention upon his correspondence to the political issue and the relation of his correspondence to his view of the people. His view of the masses, in accordance with the development of class struggle, suffered a transformation since the enlightening period, and brought a diversion from the enlightening to the social organic view of the world; then, limited to our chief study on a locus of his transformation and the structure of his thought, this article leaves out the current of other thought in close connection with it.
