<論説>太平天国の性質について

Abstract

現今の日本及び中国の学界では、太平天国の運動を以て、専ら農民戦争と規定する傾向が強いようであるが、その論拠はあまり明白でない。太平天国は何故に阿片戦争後十年という時期に起ったか。何故にそれが広西省の山地に起ったか。何故にそれが湖南・湖北・揚子江のルートをとり、あのように機動性を発揮し得たか。太平軍に敵対する清朝義勇兵は何故に湖南において募集されなければならなかったか。太平軍及び瀬軍の長所・弱点はどこにあったか。凡そ此等の点を一々検討することなしには、太平天国の性質は解明しつくされたとは言えない。私は従前の研究家とは全く異った角度から此等の諸問題を解明するに努力し、単に旧中国の諸叛乱の性質を明かにするのみならず、中国とヨーロッパとの交渉吏研究に対して一の繊発点を提供したい。

Though in the Japanese and Chinese circles at present there is a current that the movement of T'ai-p'ing-t'ien-kuo 太平天国 is to be nothing but a peasant uprising, the grounds of their argument are not clear. Why-did the T'ai-p'ing-t'ien-kuo occur in the very tenth year after the Opium War? Why did it take place in the mountainous region of Kuang-si-sing 広西省? Why did it take the route of Hunan 湖南, Hupei 湖北, and Yangtze River, and could it display its mobility? Why did the militiamen of Ts'ing 清 have to be recruited in Hunan? What is the weak point or the strong point of the T'ai-p'ing 太平 army or the Siang 湘 army? Without the examination of these points, the nature of T'ai-p'ing-t'ien-kuo cannot be completely explained at all. In the quite different angle from the traditional students, we try to elucidate these problems, not only explaining the nature of various rebellion in the old China, but also offering a starting point for historical study of the relation between China and Europe.
