<論説>一九世紀イギリス政治史への一視角

Abstract

「マルクス主義は、わが国における社会科学研究の思想的風土のようなものになっている」とは、すでに識者の指摘するところだが、このことは、本論がかかわる一九世紀イギリス史研究に関しても例外ではない。高等学校の教科書はいさ知らず、およそ歴史をこととするインテリの目には、一九世紀のイギリスは、なかんずく産業革命を最初に起した先進国として、ブルジョワジーの発展がきわめて自生的に進行した国と映っているにちがいない。それが今では一つの常識だからである。この常識は、上にのべた限りでは、決して間違いではないとしても、しかし、われわれは、この場合も、マルクス主義がわが国の思想的風土と化したことがもたらす功罪に、注意を払う必要があるだろう。大体、歴史学を、どちらかといえば、人文科学よりも社会科学の方に分類しようとする昨今の傾向自体が、そのことの結果と思われるが、歴史現象の魏明にあたって、「マルクス主義」が万能でありえないのはいうまでもあるまい。確かに経済史はいいとしても、政治史、思想史、文化史ともなれば、一枚岩のマルクス主義的解明では、なんとしても不十分ということにならざるをえないだろう。本論は、そのような見地から、一九世紀イギリス政治史について、従来のマルクス主義的常識からはみ出すと思われる三つの問題を検討することで、この時期の政治史に、もう一つ別の照明を当てようと試みたものである。

In our academic world of historicl researches, the history of the 19th century England has, above all, been considered as a typical course of capitalist development, It has come to be a fixed prejudice that England was the most advanced nation in the modern history of the world. This might not be curious if we take it into account that Marxism now exists as an intellectual climate among Japanese intellectuals. However, we have to pay attention to the fact that Marxist researchers are apt to look at history from a one-sided viewpoint of economics. Indeed, Marxism has its strong points--for example it is very useful for analysing dynamics of revolutionary process of history, but we cannot help taking notice of its weak points when we are engaged in the studies of political, intellectual, and cultural history. For the Marxist method of approach has, in itself, a way of logical thinking and is bound to lead to an inevitable result of losing sight of human beings who make history. The aim of this paper is to re-evaluaate the political history of the 19th century England from another different viewpoint. Among many problems I pick up three--conservatism, mass democracy, and gentleman's idealism which I think have not been discussed within the reach of Marxist approaches. It must be my great pleasure if this trial should be able to throw some new light on the history of the 19th ceutury England.
