<研究ノート>イギリスにおけるマキァヴェリズムの系譜 : ボーリングブルックの場合

Abstract

周知の如く一七世紀末から一八世紀前半にいたる約一世紀のイギリスは、フランスを圧倒して政治経済的に上昇しつつあった一面、かなり動揺しつつあった時代であり、緊張した点で恰もメデイチ家のロレンツオ時代を連想させる観があったが、この間におけるイギリスの政治家ボーリングブルックの政治論なり政治的行動は節操あるが如く無きが如くで、そのレアリズムに徹した点は正にマキァヴェリと軌を一にする趣きがあるやに思われる。本稿においては彼が単にマキァヴェリの弟子たる立場のみでなく時として必ずしもマキァヴェリに追随せず、認識と実践に立脚して一種哲学考的風格を持し、むしろ独自の立場をとった便宜的マキァヴェリストであったか否か・両春の類似性と相違点や、一種ユートピアン的傾向さえ見られるマキァヴェリと彼との似て非なる局面をも併せて比較検討してみたい。

As an established fact, England from the end of the 17 th to the first half of the 18 th century was rising in the political and economical sphere by overwhelming France. On the other hand, it was the period of disturbing and strss like the period of Lorenzo de' Medici. In this period Bolingbroke's thought and movement in politics was constant or inconstant, and his thorough realism might be the very Machiavellism. In this article, he was, though he was a disciple of Machiavelli, not a simple follower of Machiavellism, having a kind of philosopher's personality based on cognition and practice. We are to compare and examine his resemblance and difference of Machiavelli with a kind of Utopian trend; whether he was a convenient Machiavellist on his own principle.
