<論説>急進主義運動におけるラショナル・ディセンターズの伝統 : 一八世紀イギリス精神史のための覚書

Abstract

一八世紀末葉の「急進主義運動」は、一七世紀の革命において充分な解決をみないまま引き継がれ、しだいにその矛盾を深めていった政治機構に対する少数の知的エリートを申心にした反撃であった。この反体制運動の一翼を担っていたのがラショナル・ディセンターズと呼ばれる人々であり、その中核をなしたのはユニテリアンズであった。彼らはその神学において一七世紀のピュァリタニズムとは断絶していたのであるが、その知的伝統、宗教的心情においてはピュァリタニズムの精髄を継承するものであり、彼らがこの運動で課題としたものは一七世紀においてピュァリタンが解決し得なかった課題に外ならない。すなわち、完全な信仰の自由とそれを保障する国家機構の形成こそが彼らの意図したものであった。

The Radical Movement occurred in England toward the end of the 18th century was an anti-governmental movement raised against the aristocratic oligarchy which had been established since the Glorious Revolution. In this political struggle, radical dissenters, who demanded religious freedom, played an important role. Theologically this small group of intellectual elite were no immediate successors of the 17th century Puritanism in England. In the intellectual tradition and religious sentiment, however, they inherited the intrinsic spirit of the 17th century Puritanism; they tried to attain what the 17th century Puritans had left undone……the perfect freedom of faith and the constitution in which such freedom can be maintained.
