<論説>いわゆる竹林七賢について

Abstract

竹林七賢なる人々は、清談を楽しんだ隠棲者として理解されることが多い。しかし彼らの交友関係と生き方を詳細に検討してみると、彼ら一人一人が隠棲者たらんと志してはいなかったことが容易に理解できる。いわゆる竹林清談は、二四九年の司馬懿のクーデターの直前から十年ほどの間、山陽の嵆康を中心として行われたものと考えられるが、魏晋交替という特殊な状況のもとで行われたこの清談には隠棲を図るというよりは、むしろ政治的災難からの保身のために政界から一時的に退避するという意図を強くみることができる。清談は、起源的には後漢末より士大夫の家庭生活の中で発達した消遣的談論であるが、しばしば人物評論の風潮と結びつくことによって、世論をかきたて、或る種の社会的勢力を形成するという、いわゆる「浮華」の風潮の交友の具となった。これに反し、竹林清談を境としてその後の清談においては政治世界からの退避を図る韜晦的談論という性格が強くなってきた。竹林清談は韜晦的清談の租型でありながらも、なお、ここには転換期における士大夫の生き方の種々の側面を見ることができる。

Chu-lin-ch'i-hsien 竹林七賢 are understood as hermits enjoying Ch'ing-t'an 淸談, but considering their friendship and their ways of life in detail, it is easy to understand that each of them did not intend to be a hermit. The so-called Chu-lin-ch'ing-t'an 竹林淸談 is held around Chi-k'ang 嵆康 at Shan-yang 山陽 for about 10 years just before the coup d'état of Szū-ma-i 司馬懿 in 249 A.D.. In this Ch'ing-t'an, under the special situation of the alternation of dynasties, Wei 魏 and Ch'in 晋, we can find the intention of temporary retirement from the political world for their self-protection against the political disaster rather than that of simple seclusion. Ch'ing-t'an was originally a leisured argument which had developed in the Shih-tai-fu's 士大夫 family life since the latter years of Hou-han 後漢, which influenced the public opinion by combining often with the fashion of personal criticism and formed some social power, that is, the so-called "Fu-hua" ｢浮華｣ : on the contrary, Ch'ing-t'an after Chu-lin-ch'ing-t'an had increased a character of discussion omitting political affairs for the political refuge. Chu-lin-ch'ing-t'an was a prototype of Ch'ing-t'an omitting political affairs, and it contained also various aspects of the Shih-tai-fu's life in the transition period.
